Why Start Early?
According to Ronald Kotulak, the author of Inside the Brain, preschool years are vital years because during this period is when children start building their foundation for thinking, language, vision, attitudes and other characteristics. It would be a waste for your children to not take the full advantage of their natural ability to learn during his or her most vital years.
Most importantly, in the first 12 years, the brain acts like a super sponge, soaking up all the information as it comes through but once the development is complete, any further learning has to be gained through the long traditional way. Studies have shown that when people immerse themselves in a language through exploration and play, they are able to learn the language faster and easier.
Moreover, by learning a second language, it will enhance children’s overall mental development thus increase their self-esteem, reasoning skills, math and reading skills, as well as a better cultural understanding and appreciation for others.
Knowing other languages and understanding other cultures is a 21st Century skill set for American students as they prepare to live and work in a global society. No matter what career students enter, they will be interacting with others around the world on a routine basis and doing business locally with those whose native language is not English.
In addition, studies have shown that children who learn a second language when they are young:
Do significantly better at tasks requiring divergent thinking, problem-solving, and figural creativity.
Score higher on the SAT & ACT than students not enrolled in a foreign language.
Show greater cognitive development in higher order thinking skills.
Foreign Language study is linked with achievements in other academic areas.
